Spelling
Common Exception Words
It is the expectation that the children are able to read and spell their year group's common exception words correctly by the end of each year. They should also be able to read and spell the common exception words for the previous year groups. The reading and spelling of these words (in routine assessments and within the child's day to day reading and writing) form part of a teacher's assessment against the age related expectations.

After our huge success with using Letters and Sounds Red Rose Phonics, in September 2024 SSMJ are taking part in the Letters and Sounds Red Rose Spelling Program for Year 2 and 3. Watch this space for more information as the children begin a journey using this new and exciting resource.
Spelling Activities at SSMJ
At SSMJ we use several resources to support the teaching of spelling including many interactive programs like Purple Mash, Century (Homework) and IDL (International Dyslexic Literacy). Children have individual logins for each of these programs.
