Sports Premium 2024/25

This academic year we aim to use the Sports Premium on a number of projects in school. These include:

  • Developing participation in girls sport within the school and the wider community.
  • Continuing to look for Year 5 and 6 children to be able to swim 25m competently and keep themselves safe in water hiring a swimming pool for the whole school to develop those key swimming skills.
  • Developing our outdoor equipment.
  • Increased attendance at sporting competitions
  • Targeting our gifted and talented sports people directing them to key resources.

Let the season commence.......

This week year 6 League A started their campaign to become league champions for a third time in a row.

Year 5/6 B league

The Year 5/6 B League began this week.  Our team got off to an amazing start registering two wins and one draw from the first round of fixtures.

Year 3/4 football competition

Our Year 3/4 football team entered the inter school competition last week and registered two wins and a draw from their fixtures.  We finished 3rd in the league, narrowly missing out on a place in the semi finals.

Playing at Burnley

Year 5 and 6 were incredibly lucky to go and play at the Prairie. SSMJ took two teams with team A going through to the final to be held in November.

Girls' football at Burnley

Both girls' teams played fantastically well in the competition.  Unfortunately, only one team could go through to the next round.  We look forward to the next round of fixtures.

Burnley Football Club Final

The finals of the Burnley Football Club were extremely exciting.  After a tense penalty shoot out in the semi-finals against the previous year's winning side, we progressed to the final.  After an entertaining stale-mate we ended the game at 0 v 0.

This took us on into another penalty shoot out, which sadly we lost, but we had a great day and represented our school in the best way possible!

Year 3 and 4 sportshall athletics competition

On Tuesday 12th November we entered the sportshall athletics competition at Oakhill School.  The children tried their best and gave a fantastic account of themselves.  We are very proud of you all.  Well done!

Champions!

It was the Burnley Football Club in the Community Year 5/6 girls' football finals on Thursday with

the best girls' teams in Burnley and Pendle.  The day did not disappoint.  We played four matches in a league format and won two of them convincingly.  The other two games were nil nil draws against Walsden.

Walsden went through to the final and we had to play a semi-final against Reedley.  We won the semi- final and had to face Walsden once again.

The final was just as close as the league games with both teams matching each other.  With 4 minutes to go, we managed to go one goal up and I thought we had done enough to win the game.  However,  Walsden did not give up that easily and they struck back to equalise 1 v 1.

The game finished 1 v 1 and we were set to face the dreaded penalty shoot out.

The girls decided who should step up and take on the challenge and we scored all our penalties.  Walsden missed one of theirs which made us champions!

Naomi Harley and Mikayla Wildgoose, who are both professional centre backs for Burnley FC Women's team were on hand to award the girls with their medals, pendant and trophy.

Myself and Mrs Matthews are extremely proud of the way the girls worked together as a team and how wonderfully they represented themselves, the school and their families.

We have now made it through to the regional finals which will be held in the future at an EFL club (yet to be decided).

Ribble Valley Kids Cup - Monday 25th September 2023

The first sporting event of the year for SSMJ saw the Year 5/6 boys football team compete in the revamped Kids Cup against several other schools in the local area. They did incredibly well and have qualified for the next stage on Thursday 16th November at the Accrington Academy. Well done boys!

Ribble Valley Girls Kids Cup - Thursday 28th September 2023

It was the turn of the Year 6 girls to represent the school and they did excellently. They showed real heart and determination - they were a credit to the school. Well done girls!

Year 3 and 4 Football 13.10.2022

The Year 3 and 4 football team participated in the Ribble Valley Schools Cup on the 13th October 2022. They did really well initially, getting through their group with ease; however, they played a really difficult game in the quarter finals and were unfortunately eliminated.

Well done to all involved.

Year 5 and 6 Girls Football

The Year 6 girls have represented the school on two occasions so far this year. The first time in January, they participated in the Ribble Valley Schools Cup. The were great ambassadors for the school but were unfortunately eliminated at the group stage.

In March 2023, they also participated in the first round of fixtures in their league. They played 6 games: winning 3, drawing 1 and losing 2. The currently sit in 5th place out of 13 teams ahead of their second round of fixtures in July.

Well done girls - we are very proud of you!

Sportshall Athletics 12.1.2023

On the 12th January 2023, a select group of Year 5 and 6 children took part in a Sportshall Athletics event at Roefield Leisure Centre.

They participated in several running, jumping and throwing events each with some great individual success. We did not, unfortunately, reach the next phase of the competition.

Well done to all the children involved - you represented the school brilliantly!

Girls' Biggest Football Day 8.3.2023

To mark International Women's Day and the HerGameToo movement, the girls at SSMJ all received a coaching session from myself and Mr Cross.

A great time was had by all with some girls inspired to go an join teams outside of school!

Year 5/6 Tag Rugby Tournament - 18/5/2023

SSMJ’s ‘gold medal rush’ continued today with a first place finish at the Y5/6 Ribble Valley Tag Rugby tournament. 🏉 🥇 😀
Their record was impeccable: played 6, won 6, just pipping Gisburn 6-5 in a nail-biting deciding game.
A remarkable achievement from the children, some of whom had barely played any rugby up until a few weeks ago.
Well done all - as ever, we are incredibly proud of you!

Outdoor Elements 2022

On the 26th, 27th and 28th September the whole school community visited Outdoor Elements. Lots of different activities were completed. These included team building, orienteering, problem solving and challenges and the visit was something we believe was important to offer the children on the back of the pandemic and how this has limited experiences such as these.
