CAFOD Visit - (CST)

Catholic Social Teaching

We had the pleasure of CAFOD visiting our school on the 31st October 2023. They came in to talk to the children about Catholic Social Teaching. Catholic Social Teaching (CST) offers a way of thinking, being, and seeing the world. It provides a vision for a just society in which the dignity of all people is recognised, and those who are vulnerable are cared for. It consists  of Catholic social thought and principles which can be used to reflect on and guide how we relate to one another in our local and global communities.

EYFS

EYFS learnt about how people use to record messages before computers were invented and looked at some old manuscripts that help to pass on important messages. EYFS then went on to look at four of the Catholic Social characters signing the different songs to accompany them. We talked about how Catholic Social Teaching is all about how we behave and act and show God’s message.

Year 1

Year 1 learnt about CAFOD’s work in Pakistan. We talked about the characters Luc the deer and Shristi the sun bear. We found out where they lived in the world and the important messages, they tell us. We talked about what makes us special and how to look after each other. We all wrote down what we could do to make a difference in the world.

Year 2

Year 2 learned about the meaning of CAFOD and what they provide for people in countries like Pakistan who have experienced recent natural disasters. We talked about the different characters including Luc the Deer in North America, Shristi the Sun Bear in South America and Patariki in Antarctica. Each character has a message. Luc told us Everyone is Special (Human Dignity). Shristi talked about ‘Showing we care’ (Solidarity). Patariki talked about ‘Taking Part’ (Participation). The children were asked to make a promise about what they could do to make the world a better place.

Year 3

The children learnt about the message of Fratelli Tutti where Pope Francis highlights the importance of being united as a global community, and working together as brother and sisters to help each other.  Through different cartoon animals, the children learnt about the key social values important in life. Children had lots of answers to the questions Mr Bob asked about our world.  They enjoyed participating in a card matching activity showing how we can help other children by using the social values.

Year 4

Year 4 started their session with Mr Dominic learning about our ‘Common World’ and the ‘Ladato Si’.

The children learnt about the message of Fratelli Tutti where Pope Francis highlights the importance of being united as a global community.  Through different cartoon animals, the children learnt about the key social values important in life. They enjoyed a matching activity showing how we can help other children by using the social values.

Year 5

Year 5 looked at the key principles of Catholic Social Teaching. The children were tasked to match up scenarios with the different categories of Catholic Social Teaching. The children used their understanding of what they have done to help them with matching the CST’s.

Year 6

Year 6 have been focussing on the fundamentals of Catholic Social Teaching. Mr Dom talked us through aspects such as human dignity and bigger words such as subsidiarity!

The children’s task was to match up scenarios with the different categories of CST. It led to a very thought-provoking and enjoyable discussion.
